"And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." And immediately they left their nets and followed him."
Mark 1:17-18
"The call to discipleship is a commitment solely to the person of Jesus Christ, a breaking through of all legalisms by the grace of him who calls...Because Christ exists he must be followed. An idea about Christ, a doctrinal system, a general religious recognition of grace or forgiveness of sins does not require discipleship. In truth, it even excludes discipleship; it is inimical to it. One enters into a relationship with an idea by way of knowledge, enthusiasm, perhaps even by carrying it out, but never by personal obedient discipleship. Christianity without the living Christ remains necessarily a Christianity without discipleship; and a Christianity without discipleship is always a Christianity without Jesus Christ. It is an idea, a myth."
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Discipleship
lyrics
Verse One
Sometimes the road is a steep one,
And it's hard when the sleet comes,
Try giving me your words when the fire and the heat comes,
When the sun that once warmed now burns,
And the fields dry ground hits–the shovel won't turn,
When the palm of the God I revere,
Feels like its crushing and I'm drowned in my fear,
I face a choice, it's my decision
Will I curse his name or will trust his wisdom?
In the heat of the battle I need more than a doctrine,
To withstand the quicksand, temptation and mocking,
We're not redeemed a system, a path or emotion,
Disciples to a master who claims our devotion,
Will I deny the one that suffered for me?
The one who took the lashes, iron nails in his feet,
Who stood up from the throne
To condescend for my sake
Is there anything I own?
What sacrifice can I make?
Chorus
C'mon! Follow me!
Weight the cost before you put your boots on!
Verse 2
Not every song has gotta be a parable,
But at times I feel a duty,
I'm standing with the quiver full,
Unequivocal that times are rip,
We heading towards the night,
Will you walk or will you turn in flight?
For a survivor the road demands your every fiber,
But there's a joy only known to the insiders,
Forsaking all, we follow for the sake of the call,
Drop the plow no hesitation or stall,
You're a disciple?
Better hope for covering,
Cause the path is rejection it's marked with suffering,
Invitation only, his call is directed,
Riding on a pony, a king unexpected,
Many a phoney believed the hype,
That by praying a prayer he somehow owed you eternal life,
But the life is in the Son,
And we forget when the prayer is said and done, its the Son that says come!
Verse 3
Don't kid yourself, this ain't for the lighthearted,
It's not self help or "seven ways to get started",
Once departed its a march behind the master,
Inner transformation,
Not an outer coat of plaster,
If its only skin deep, then why should I expect to stand when the rubber hits the concrete?
We defeat the very purpose of his mission,
If we just turn it into wisdom and forget about submission,
We're good at shunning things that appear to be sinful,
But when it comes to going out we're not so nimble,
There's grace for ones that try and might trip along the way,
But for those who play it safe the master calls them a disgrace,
Remember Jesus who went beyond the gates and and died on the cross sacrificed for our sakes,
The call has been made, his voice is persistent,
Is He the universal God or is He more of an assistant?
